Roadside romeos

What would it be like when you are walking down the street and every single head is staring at you? What would it be like when you are returning home from school and the boys on the street harass you by saying filthy words? What would it be like when you are alone in a small alley, and a gang of boys comes close to you and tries to touch your body? These are actually not new things for girls in our city. The girls seem to be used to these things and so are the boys. Last Sunday evening, I was returning home from my workplace. A micro bus carrying kids to their homes from school stopped next to me. The conductor opened the door of the micro bus. I just saw him briefly and the face he made after I saw him was so unusual. In addition, I could even hear him mumbling some filthy words. I felt so frustrated by this. You don’t have the right to say to others whatever you like. I was indeed very offended by his act towards me. I felt so hopeless seeing his act that I couldn’t even respond...

Fair Play in Enrollment

I was there preparing for my entrance exam, when a girl popped in and said something which totally discouraged me to study for my exam. What she said was - she has a “so called good bonding” with this powerful person of this party, and it would be easier for her to get into the institution. And I was standing on the ground and became like, "why I am putting all my efforts into it when I know that my name won't be seen on the board?" And I have no such powerful people in my link that would help me to get admission in that particular institution. It's not that I don't believe in my studies. It's nothing like that. But what's the use of studying all day and night just to know that despite having capacity and passion you won't be enrolled in that institution? The rooted problem I see is the lack of knowledge of accountability in the students, administration or i...

Your move, Girls!

Riding a micro bus on my way to Ratna Park, I looked through the window and saw the wide open ground of Tundikhel. My eyes saw many people playing cricket and football, but my mind noticed something different. There were tall boys, short boys, fat boys, thin boys, young boys, old boys and so on, but not even a single girl was to be seen. I moved my eyes here and there, from one corner of that plain ground to another, but I could see nobody except boys. The place looked like a “girl-free zone” to me. It’s quite astonishing how the female population outnumbers the male population in our country, but in the context of people being in the public sphere, the male population has always been higher. Women have been given a 33 percent quota, still we find girls lagging behind in the public sphere. It may be because of our own perception too. For example, when we are riding a bus being driven by a woman, we think that she is very courageous and amazing. But when we see a woman driving a car,...
